EC soon clears merger Vodafone and Ziggo’

Reuters report based on two sources that the European Commission will approve the merger between Vodafone and Ziggo. The announcement of the final decision of the Commission is scheduled for August 3rd.

The latest news out about the status of the merger came , related information that both parties wanted to concessions to the European Commission to get approval. It was not clear what exactly went for concessions, although it is common for telcos open up a part of their network to overcome objections from regulators. Reuters reported Friday that it was “small concessions” would be leaving the Commission were to decide in favor of the merger.

If the merger is indeed occurs, the joint venture is the second largest telecommunications provider in the Netherlands. So Ziggo currently the largest party in the field of cable and Vodafone takes the second place in the ranking of mobile operators, according to Reuters. None of the parties the agency could provide substantive comments.

The plans for the merger were announced in February. Both parties intend to merge their Dutch business into a joint venture, of which they are equally owner. According to Reuters, Vodafone paid to Liberty Global a billion euros to pull the shares in the new company equal. In this way, the companies will be stronger against rival KPN.
