Lenin Moreno, the president of Ecuador, had a meeting in London with British officials about the withdrawal of asylum to Julian Assange. The WikiLeaks founder has resided in the embassy of Ecuador in London since 2012.

According to a source that has connections with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moreno has almost reached an agreement to transfer Assange to Great Britain. The agreement may even have been reached and Assange will be removed from the embassy of Ecuador this week, writes The Intercept .

The Intercept further indicates that it is unlikely that Great Britain will guarantee that Assange will not be transferred to the United States. The website expects Assange to be put in prison in Britain, despite no big charges against him.

At the moment, the only indictment against Assange is an arrest warrant that was not fulfilled in 2012. He received this indictment when he fled to Ecuador’s embassy in 2012. There is a 3-month prison sentence and a fine on the indictment, although this punishment could possibly be challenged on the basis of earlier times that Assange was imprisoned. In Sweden there was also a charge of assault against Assange, but the government of that country last year decided to withdraw the search.

What exactly happens to Assange after being delivered to Great Britain is unclear. The United States wants to prosecute Assange since 2010 for the leakage of internal documents from the US government via the WikiLeaks website. It only turns out to be difficult to prosecute him for violating the anti-espionage legislation, without being able to indict other media for espionage and the freedom of the press in this way.

That Ecuador would surrender Assange, has been coming for a while. In January the government of Ecuador called Assange’s stay untenable. The WikiLeaks founder would also have broken into the communication system of the Ecuadorian embassy and since March no longer have access to the internet and no more visitors may receive.
