Electric cars will not save the planet from ecological disaster
BMW i8

A new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, showed that the mass distribution of hybrid and all-electric vehicles will not lead to a drastic reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Scientists estimate that passenger vehicles are a relatively small part in the total emissions – 20 percent of all carbon dioxide. Even if we will take on the BMW i8, this problem will not be solved by itself. Furthermore, the study reiterated the findings that, although the electric and do not pollute the air, for they do stations that produce electricity.

The study, conducted by researchers at the State University of North Carolina, based on modeling the amount of harmful substances that may be released into the atmosphere over the next 40 years. Among other things, the calculations take into account the price of oil and the cost of batteries.

According to the most optimistic scenario of more than hundreds of options considered, by 2050 about 40 percent of the cars in the United States will be represented hybrids or electric. However, this is little or no impact on reducing emissions of key air pollutants, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. And this despite the zero pollution electric cars.

However, it is not necessary to consider the application scientists as a guide to action. According to the publication The Verge author of Joseph De Carolis, the study results do not mean that we should abandon the purchase of electric cars that may help ease the country’s dependence on oil and improve urban air quality. He also warns against hasty conclusions, noting that the State effectively conduct purposeful policy of reducing emissions, rather than promote automotive technology, hoping that the problem will solve itself. If long-term electric and manifest themselves on the positive side, it is only because of the improvement of the power generation system, the researcher notes.
