Epic makes cross-platform software Fortnite available for free to developers

Epic Games has decided to make Fortnite cross platform software freely available to developers. The software includes features such as logging in and matchmaking. The software will be released mid-2019.

Epic Games reports that the software is suitable for all platforms, all engines and every digital store. According to the developer, the features can be combined with software from other parties. Around the third quarter of 2019, a developer kit will be published that includes Epics online services with Unreal Engine and Unity integration. Epics online services run via Amazon Web Services.

The software is first made available for the PC and in the course of the third and fourth quarter of 2019 for other platforms. During that period, the rest of the features will come out in phases, such as in-game voice chat and external storage. On which platform or via which channel the service is offered is not yet known. The developer says he will give more information in the course of the months.

Electronic Arts has announced in October that it is offering a somewhat comparable service called Project Atlas . This is an online platform for game developers who can use tools, artificial intelligence and the Frostbite engine to make games, for example. It is not yet known when this service will become available and whether it is free to use.
