Ericsson unveils first live test of the fifth – generation chipsets for robots

Ericsson has unveiled the world’s first 5G network chipset solution that supports the use of multiple chips on the same device in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO.

The new solutions unveiled at the Tokyo Bay 2017 Summit, held from May 24 to 26, 2017, address the use of robots to integrate automation into public and private infrastructure. These solutions can also be used in other industries.

During the pilot review, a robot was employed with a head-mounted camera, where live high-bandwidth video content was transmitted to a remote controlled data center to meet the needs of the available computer resources. The analysis is then carried out quickly and important instructions are sent, such as providing a dynamic map of the robot from the management center, based on video processing data. This video and automated instructions were transmitted through two different slides, eventually leading to remote control and management based on robots and security solutions across the fifth generation networks.

Commenting on the new solutions, Jean Haglund, Head of Digital Technology and Systems, Ericsson, said: “By continuing to develop an integrated system of fifth-generation technology and solutions and Internet object technology in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO, we are seeking to implement multiple network segments on the same device to enable A range of different services with distinctive characteristics. The new review of these solutions shows only one of the potentially endless uses that open up new business opportunities for both operators and other industries. ”

Network chip solutions are one of the key capabilities that will enhance the flexibility of future networks, enabling the establishment of multiple logical networks based on a common physical infrastructure. Ericsson’s VGN systems benefit from NFV functionality and, by integrating distributed cloud functionality and network segmentation solutions, new levels of flexibility and improved processes will stimulate innovation in the business.

Network chipset solutions deliver significant benefits to a number of sectors such as automobiles, manufacturing and transportation by enhancing the efficiency of network operations in reducing network latency and speeding up to service requirements.

NTT DOCOMO plays a leading role in developing and testing fifth-generation network technologies in collaboration with leading suppliers around the world. The company has been developing network chipset solutions with Ericsson since September 2014. At the 5th Generation Network World Conference in London in June 2016, the two companies have successfully tested the concept of the V5 chip solution.
