‘Essential deletes next smartphone and puts itself in the shop window’

Essential Products Inc., co-founded by Android pioneer Andy Rubin, would have stopped developing a smartphone successor to its first product, the Essential Phone. The company would also look for a potential buyer.

Essential was working on the development of a new smartphone, but stopped and now focuses on an unspecified smart home product. Bloomberg claims that this is based on sources that are familiar with Essential’s plans. The smarthomeproduct must be released sometime next year.

Co-founder Rubin does not deny the news coverage. On Twitter he reports that there are always several products in development and that some can be deleted if the preference goes to products that can be successful. Future products are mobile and homeproducts, according to him.

Essential would also investigate possible sales and a potentially interested party would have reported. The sale would concern the entire company, including patents and likely personnel, should Essential decide to continue with this.

Essential started last August with the delivery of its Essential smartphone. There had been indications that it was not going well with that sale.
