EU wants to know if Facebook scandal also concerned data of EU citizens

Vera Jourova, the EU Commissioner for Justice, wants to know from Facebook whether the Cambridge scandal also involved data from EU citizens. The European Commission wants clarification on this within two weeks.

To this end, she sent a letter to Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer. According to Reuters, which reports that the letter has been read, Jourova also wants to know how Facebook will inform the authorities and the affected citizens if data from EU citizens was part of the scandal . A spokesman for Facebook said that the company continues to make a strong commitment to ensuring people’s privacy and that the questions will be answered.

In the letter Jourova would have said that confidence in Facebook has decreased and that statements from managers of Facebook have not taken away her worries. The Commissioner also wants to know whether the social media platform is certain that a similar situation can no longer occur and whether stricter rules are needed.

On Monday it appeared that the US Federal Trade Commission is going to investigate Facebook’s actions in protecting privacy. Last week, the European Parliament announced a similar investigation.

The investigations follow the scandal surrounding Cambridge Analytics, an American company that acquired the data of fifty million Facebook users. This was done by buying the data from the developer of a Facebook app that had been consulted by several hundred thousand users.
