EU will decide on the progress of the GitHub acquisition by Microsoft on 19 October

The European Commission will announce on 19 October if it agrees to the acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft. The Redmond company wants to acquire GitHub for a total of 7.5 billion dollars.

The European Commission received a notification from Microsoft on 14 September about the plan to incorporate GitHub. As the overarching EU competition regulator, the Commission must assess this. On 19 October, the Commission can give the green light for the acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft, with or without the imposition of one or more concessions. Instead, the regulator can also decide to carry out a more thorough investigation into the takeover plan.

Microsoft announced in early June that the GitHub wants to acquire 7.5 billion dollars . That acquisition is somewhat obvious, given that Microsoft came forward in 2017 as the owner of the project with the most contributions to GitHub: Visual Studio Code. Microsoft also stopped in 2017 with its own software hosting site Codeplex; the company advised users to switch to GitHub. With GitHub, Microsoft is more likely to be competing with Amazon in the field of cloud services.
