Train passengers can now take advantage of 4G in the 50-kilometer Channel Tunnel. This is possible through the upgrade of the 3G network with 4G devices. Tunnel operator Eurotunnel works together with four providers.

Eurotunnel Eurotunnel has the 4G devices made compatible with the 4G networks EE, O2, Vodafone and Bouygues Telecom. Therefore, the parties have signed a ten-year contract. According to the tunnel operator can train between France and the United Kingdom, which speeds up to 140km / h through the tunnel, now on the Internet with an average ten times higher speed compared to the old 3G network that was built in the tunnel. Every year approximately 21 million passengers travel through the undersea tunnel.

According to Eurotunnel, the construction of the required hardware in the Channel Tunnel cost almost three years. One of the challenges that Alcatel-Lucent encountered when installing the 4G equipment was separating mobile p-traffic intended for normal phone calls, and specifically for the railways developed GSM-R standard.
