EWICON – cheapest way to wind power production


Wind, like the sun , can be an excellent source of alternative energy. And it is already proving countries such as Denmark, which is going in 2050 to completely switch to this energy source. But the traditional approach to collect energy from the wind is not always as effective and relevant as it would like. Conventional wind turbines with larger blades to disperse turbines require frequent and expensive equipment and attracted the attention of animal rights – from the blades are often killed birds.

It is not surprising that some researchers have created a prototype of the issue of turbine installations in which the wind is going in closed chambers. So one of these new technologies to collect wind energy proposed Dutch, presenting its development EWICON (or Electrostatic WInd energy CONvertor).

When the majority of wind turbines generate electricity through mechanical energy, EWICON, devoid of blades creates it by charged particles, in this case – water drops. Current design design looks like a big steel frame, in which the horizontal tube are isolated. In each of these tubes are electrodes and nozzles that are constantly injected into the air positively charged water particles. When the particles start their motion, the voltage in the device changes and form an electric field, which can be used as energy.

The volume of the received energy will depend, in this case, not only on the wind speed, but also on the number of drops in the tube, the number of charge carriers in these droplets and the very strength of the electric field.

From the words of the developers, such a system can be easily installed on either the ground and in the water as conventional wind turbines. But this design was developed by researchers is to ensure that such traps can be used in urban settings. Expensive in construction and maintenance of wind farms is not very suitable for use in large cities due to lack of space. But setting EWICON can be adapted to any architecture by simply selecting the required for this size and shape. And because the devices have no moving parts, the noise and the cost of their service will also be much lower than that of conventional wind turbines.


However the guys from the company Mecanoo, have offered design and use of technology developed by Delft University of Technology have created a few prototypes of reduced plant EWICON, one of which is currently in the building Stadstimmerhuis 010 in Rotterdam, and the other – the campus of Delft University of Technology. Scientists are testing their capabilities and try to gain support for the funding to build a full-scale model, which can generate more energy.
