Facebook alternative Openbook does not reach Kickstarter goal

and starts again

Facebook alternative Openbook, which promises to focus on privacy without tracking, has not achieved the target on Kickstarter. Instead, Openbook will soon restart the campaign with a much lower target.

Openbook Openbooks campaign, which ended on Thursday , came to 47,323 dollars, converted about 41,600 euros, where the campaign had a goal of 100,000 dollars. In total 1303 people supported the project. Openbook has sent an email to backers that the campaign will start again soon and has also put an update online.

In doing so, it shifts the priorities. Instead of using a desktop site Openbook wants to start with mobile apps. Moreover, it wants to finance half a year with the $ 30,000, instead of a year. In addition, the founders will invest in savings themselves to make Openbook a success. The campaign will restart on August 19th and last for nineteen days.

One of the initiators is Jaya Baloo, the chief information security officer of the Dutch telecom company KPN. The founder and director of Openbook is Joel Hernández and furthermore the project is supported by Philip Zimmermann; the creator of e-mail encryption software pgp.

Openbook wants to make money by taking a percentage of transactions on the platform. The initiators hereby recognize that Openbook is in fact also a marketplace. In addition, the initiators think they can earn money by helping companies set up their own social networks. It is not clear whether the use of the platform is also possible without spending money. Openbook is located in The Hague.
