Facebook announced Monday that more than 5 million businesses are advertising on its social network every month and has announced plans to upgrade its ad group in an effort to attract more small businesses to its mobile platform.

Cheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer, said in an interview with Reuters that the number of advertising subscribers represents a major achievement that shows that Facebook still has scope for growth despite its huge scope.

Facebook, which has the largest social networking network in the world with more than 1.86 billion active users per month, announced last September that its number of businesses had reached 4 million, and in March 2016 the number was 3 million, Which means it attracts about 1 million new advertisers every 6 months.

Facebook is in a constant battle with Google to dominate the digital advertising market, and both companies are expected to jointly control about 46 percent of digital advertising spending by 2018, according to market research firm eMarketer.

Although the largest number of existing Facebook advertisers is focused on major brands, the company seeks to attract small businesses by offering a range of tools, such as mass targeting, mobile design studio, and e-courses available to date in 10 languages.

Facebook said the latest changes include the “one click” option in Facebook’s high-performance ad republishing ad manager and a desktop gadget that allows customer message management.

“Small businesses offer important products and services, but they are also a huge driver of career growth in a world where career growth is increasingly uncertain and something that really worries people,” Sandberg said.

Facebook said 75 percent of its businesses were outside the United States, adding that the largest industries announced through the social network were e-commerce, entertainment, media and retail. The United States, then Brazil, then Thailand, then Mexico, followed by the UK’s largest markets. The fastest growing markets are India, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina.

The company explained that about 50% of advertisers are creating ads for mobile devices, reflecting the growing importance of smart phones and mobile devices in the future of Facebook.

In February, Facebook said more than 90 percent of its users access mobile service, while mobile ads account for 84 percent of total advertising revenue.
