Facebook has temporarily removed the apps from the American analytics company Crimson Hexagon from its platform and has started an investigation into the company’s contracts. Facebook did so after asking questions from The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper writes that Facebook investigates whether the contracts of the analytics company violate its conditions. Crimson Hexagon claims to have one of the largest databases of social media posts with a total volume of around one trillion posts. They would also come from Twitter and Instagram. According to newspaper sources, the company has contracts with various US government agencies and with a Russian non-profit organization with ties to the Kremlin.

After questions from the newspaper about these contracts, Facebook said that it is not aware of all agreements and that it will start an investigation to find out how the company collects, stores and shares data. A spokesman for Crimson Hexagon says that it does not collect private data from social media or from other sources and that it keeps to the agreements with its partners. The company profiles itself as an ‘ai-powered consumer insights company’.

The access to Facebook data via apps is under stricter supervision after it appeared that the data warehouse Cambridge Analytica had access to the data of 87 million people via a personality quiz.
