Facebook make changes to the “real names” policy after severe criticism

Announced Facebook on Friday for two of the process improvements that are designed to facilitate the way for those who are removed unfairly because of “real names” imposed on users of the company’s social network that policy.

And designed the new changes to the “real names” policy – which, seen as unfair in the right category of users – in a manner gives affected by major area to convince Facebook because they do not use their real names, and also demand of reach for users under false names for more information led them to report.

The policy, which calls for Facebook users using their real names, has been severely criticized, largely by members of the network, as well as activists who find the use of real names in the seriousness of their work.

He wrote vice president of growth at Facebook, Alex Shultz, in a letter published by the company yesterday, “We want to reduce the number of people who are required to check their names on Facebook, and that those who do not use the names of people he knew but them.” Schultz said “We want to make it easier for people to confirm their names if necessary.”

To this end, it will be for those claimants to “confirm” their names to Facebook now the ability to add context and details that led them to adopt pseudonyms, which was not available in the past.

Schultz said, “This would help our team operations community a better understanding of the situation.” He pointed out that it will also help to better understand the reasons why people are not currently able to confirm their names.

The second big change is a new requirement forcing of the report of another user does not use his real name under company policy, to explain their reasons for reporting and to provide Facebook with detailed information, which would reduce the likelihood of the use of a weapon of this method.

In spite of these changes, which are expected to enter into force in December / December, Facebook does not show a retreat from the policy, which Schultz said it makes Facebook network a safer place.

He pointed out that by saying “when people use their names that he knew the others, it makes them more responsibility for what they say, as well as making hide behind the name of the anonymous harassment, or bullying, or inconvenience, or defraud another person, is difficult.”

The move comes in response to an open letter sent to Facebook by a number of groups, including the “Electronic Frontier Foundation” EFF, and the “Human Rights Watch”, and the Civil Liberties Union of American California state, the company is demanding reform of this policy.
