Fans old Final Fantasy VII game increase resolution with machine learning

Meanwhile, the PC version of Final Fantasy VII is almost 21 years old. It is therefore not surprising that graphics look dated, especially the backgrounds. A number of muds from the Final Fantasy VII fan community thought that these backgrounds could use some upscaling.

A mud under the name CaptRobau shows in a Final Fantasy modding forum the difference between the backgrounds without and with the use of his Remako HD Field Mod. This is based on AI Gigapixel , software that can automatically optimize the quality of photos by means of machine learning.

During the development of Gigapixel, the software has analyzed millions of photos. A neural network thus learned how images could best be enlarged and sharpened, with more detail. CaptRobau claims that the resolution of the background, using the mod, can be increased to four hundred percent.

According to the mud, the Remako HD Field Mod is available next week for all those interested. Another mud on the same forum, satsuki, applies a similar method to CaptRobau. However, he uses Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks, or Esrgan , for the upscaling of the backgrounds.
