Fire network cables made communication part

of Seoul almost completely lame
A fire in a tunnel in a western part of Seoul has destroyed cables from telecom company KT. The fire disrupted much of the communication in a part of the city, including the emergency number of the police.

The fire in the underground facility of KT, one of the three largest telecom providers in the country, started Saturday and lasted almost ten hours. In addition, 168,000 telephone lines and 220 bundles of fiber optic cables were burned, Korean media such as Hani and Korean Times write . The cause is not yet known.

Due to the disruption of the networks, 210,000 households in the west of Seoul could not call mobile and they had no internet for their fixed connections. The police and emergency services were also temporarily unavailable, as were the computer networks of hospitals and the networks of security cameras. In addition, hundreds of shops in the district could not be paid. Pay telephones for the fixed line still functioned, judging by photos of people standing in line for such devices.

Sunday morning 60 percent of the mobile and 70 percent of the internet connections were restored; the entire recovery operation will take a week. The total damage is estimated at 247 million euros. The incident leads to discussions in South Korea about the dependence of ICT technology, the inspection of network facilities and the cooperation of the large telecom companies. The Minister for ICT is holding urgent consultations with the three telecom companies KT, SKT and LG Uplus to prevent repetition. Cooperation between companies must ensure that connections remain in the air, even if a part of a single company fails.
