Flower advertising – a swarm of bees
# Fiction | Flower advertising – a swarm of bees March 10, 2013
21 February 2013 , the magazine «Science Express» published an interesting study conducted by scientists at Bristol University. It turns out that the usual wild flowers to convey information about their bees Honeybees, use high information technology and powerful marketing tools. There is a lot to learn and advertising specialists and creators of the new-fangled digital gadgets. So, even though the nature and teaches us to love the music , but electronic communication it seems, are present.
We begin, as usual, from the beginning. Any advertising will be successful only in a single case: if it reaches its target audience. The target audience of flowers – bees, conducting much of their time in search of plants and honey bees pollinating flowers.
The researchers, led by Professor Robert Daniel (Daniel Robert) found that the flowers attract bees not only the aroma and bright color, but also the very real … electrical signals. And an electrical signal, along with other attractive factors of plants, bees and bumblebees is the information that it is time to pollinate the flowers. So, advertising with the use of electronic technology is not unique to human society, but also in the wild.
Usually, the plants are charged negatively and generate a weak electric field. Bees also circling in the air have a positive charge. How the flowers and the bees find each other, the science can not yet say. One thing is clear that small electric field may well be one of the ways of the bee and the flower to find each other.
Place the electrode in petunia flowers, the researchers found that when a bee lands on a flower, it is a few minutes changes the capacity of its electric charge (apparently a “minus” to “plus”). Maybe so flower inform other bees that he recently visited their colleague in the hive? To their surprise, the researchers found the ability to determine the difference between bees several electric fields emanating from the flowers.
However, not so clear. Scientists have conducted tests and found that bees better define the difference between the two colors than between electric charges.
The researchers have a question: how do the bees and bumble bees are able to detect the electric field? Full confidence in it, but the researchers suggest that the susceptibility of electricity to meet the bristles shmelinyh breasts. Remember, as the hairs stuck to a CRT old TV screens? So, it is likely that we have here a similar effect.
Detection ability of bees and flowers to a kind of “electronic communication” completely change the presentation of the science of the interaction of plants and insects. Dr Heather Whitney (Heather Whitney), co-author of the study, shared his thoughts on the recently made a discovery:
Discovered communication tools give color to inform their potential pollinators of Honeybees his precious nectar and pollen reserves.
