Found a way to extend the life of lithium-sulfur batteries

Through a combination of special anode and cathode materials, we were able to significantly extend the life of lithium-sulfur batteries up to 1,400 recharge cycles.

It happened because commonly used lithium metal was replaced by an anode of a silicon-carbon compound. As a result – improved stability: a key factor in the performance and life cycle of the battery. As the cathode, there are used particles of sulfur. This significantly reduces the production costs compared with the commonly used cobalt.

Looking ahead, the scientists say that it plans to increase the energy density per unit mass of lithium-sulfur batteries up to 600 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh / kg), which is greater than that of the best lithium-ion battery (400 Wh / kg) and almost twice larger than that of conventional electronics used in everyday.

In addition to the potential use of such batteries in electric cars, the researchers believe that lithium-sulfur batteries are excellent candidates for use in smartphones and generally most other portable devices.

Lithium-sulfur batteries may even be able to apply to aircraft operating on electricity. However, prior to this progress, we still have a long way – sums Altyus.
