Foundation awards Erasmus Prize 2015 to Wikipedia




The Erasmus Prize is awarded this year to Wikipedia. According to the Erasmus Prize Foundation, the online encyclopedia Wikipedia deserves the award because the “diffusion of knowledge promoted by a comprehensive, universally accessible encyclopedia to put on.”

Wikipedia logo (small) The Foundation states that the price, which consists of a sum of 150,000 euros, especially assigned to the underlying community who writes the entries on Wikipedia and edits. Worldwide are provided by thousands of users contributions to Wikipedia.

The Erasmus Prize is awarded to a person or organization who makes a special contribution in the eyes of the foundation in the cultural, social or scientific field. According to Wikipedia Erasmus Prize Foundation plays a major role in countries where the availability of neutral and open information is not obvious. Would Wikipedia with his open character ensure that lemma always weighed as sources of information often not neutral.

Across the NIS let Wikimedia Netherlands know that they are proud of the prize. Director Sandra Rientjes argues that the 14 year old Wikipedia for many Internet users one of the most important sources of information and that in the Netherlands hundreds of volunteers contribute to the online encyclopedia.
