Fox-IT: Dutch companies affected by SamSam malware

According to security firm Fox-IT, several Dutch companies have become victims of the SamSam malware in recent months. How many companies have actually paid ransom is not known.

This is what Fox-IT says in an ANP message, according to the NOS. In the past months, dozens of companies have been infected with the SamSam scam software, although no specific names are mentioned. Also, the security company can not indicate how many of the affected companies actually paid ransom to the hackers. However, Fox-IT thinks that many more companies are affected than has now become known.

In the United States, two Iranians have recently been charged with spreading the SamSam malware, which uses vulnerabilities in remote desktop functionality. They would have been involved in hacking attacks in the US, including hospitals. The suspects are still in Iran, so it is unclear whether they can ever be arrested.

In the past three years, several networks have been infiltrated by the SamSam malware. The software settles on systems, after which they are blocked; these can then only be unblocked again if the victim pays ransom, which must usually be paid in bitcoin.
