The French company Nexedi say they have filed suit against Apple in order to get things done that the company offers better support for HTML5 in iOS. Now, developers would still be dependent on Apple’s own WebKit library.

According Nexedi is true that a browser which does not this version of Webkit is based, will immediately be removed from the Apple App Store. The result is that Apple kind of browsers do not allow in the App Store, writes the company in a blog post. The company further claimed that current performance of HTML5 on iOS far lag behind other platforms. Thus, various functions were not available, such as participating in some videoconferencing and watching videos in the WebM format.

Nexedi says that his customers would recommend no other browsers, because the performance of HTML5 in Chrome for iOS is the same as that in the Safari Webkit requirement from Apple. Moreover, it is not possible to move away from iOS since the iPhone in certain markets represented very strong, the company said. This would Nexedi now have to invest time and money in the back porting of HTML5 code for iOS.

A few years ago would have believed a French law to protect small businesses against unfair contracts as Nexedi bulk. The French company believes that this also applies to Apple’s App Store contract and therefore hopes for a good outcome of the case. Nexedi is a software company with 35 employees in their own words and focuses on the development of open source software.
