French provider Iliad has no interest in Belgian telecom market

The French provider and price fighter Iliad has no interest in the Belgian telecom market. The party was named by analysts as the daring candidate to take the vacated position as the fourth operator in the country.

According to De Morgen , Iliad announced in an investor conversation that the focus is on home country France and Italy. The CEO of the French operator replied to a question about whether the company was interested in the Belgian and German markets.

The Belgian telecom watchdog BIPT issued a report earlier this year and reported that there was interest from new operators to get started in Belgium. Analysts assumed that it was the French Iliad.

Alexander De Croo, the Belgian minister of Telecom, has long wanted to be a fourth player on the Belgian telecoms market to promote competition. The Belgian government reached an agreement in July. At the upcoming frequency auction in 2019, space will be created for a fourth operator .

According to De Croo, Belgian consumers are currently paying too much due to a lack of competition. The Belgian telecom market is controlled by Proximus, Telenet and Orange. Whether other parties than Iliad are interested in entering the Belgian market is not known.
