Geneva Observatory has discovered a new type of star

Swiss Team of the famous Geneva Observatory reached accurate results using a relatively small 1.2-meter telescope. They discovered a new class of variable stars by measuring minute changes in the brightness of the stars of open cluster NGC 3766 in the constellation Centaurus. “The very existence of this new class of variable stars – astrophysicists call”, – said Sophie Sesen, a member of the team. – “Current theoretical models predict that the light (the intensity) should be changed periodically so our efforts are entirely focused on getting more information about the behavior of a strange new type stars.”

The results are based on continuous measurement of brightness of more than three thousand stars in the cluster NGC 3766 for seven years. Scientists have discovered that the 36 stars in the cluster behave in strange ways – their brightness is constantly fluctuating in the range of 0.1% of normal. Such changes take place in a period of two to twenty hours. The test star a bit hotter and brighter than the sun, but on the whole quite ordinary. A new class of stars is still nameless.

The level of accuracy Swiss team at least twice those achieved by other telescopes – and is sufficient to register the first time, these small changes.

“This level of sensitivity we have achieved thanks to the high quality observations, combined with a very careful analysis of the data,” – says Us Movlavi, the leader of the research team. – “In addition, we conducted an extensive program of observations, which lasted seven years. A large telescope such long study would hardly be possible. ”

Many stars are known as variable or pulsating stars, as their apparent brightness varies with time. Exactly how the brightness changes – it depends on the properties of the medium surrounding the star. Due to this phenomenon, originated a whole branch of astrophysics, called asteroseismology, where astronomers can “listen” to these stellar oscillations to learn more about the star, and the principles of its existence.

Although the cause of variability remains unknown if tantalizing detail: some of these stars apparently rapidly spinning. They rotate at a speed which exceeds the half of the critical speed, which in turn is the threshold beyond which the star becomes unstable and discharged material in the space.

“In such circumstances, rapid rotation will have an important impact on the intrinsic properties of the stars, but we can not adequately model the changes in the world” – explains Movlavi. – “We hope our discovery zamotiviruet professionals to address the issue in the hope of understanding the origins of these mysterious change.”
