German motoring organization: keyless access to cars is cheap bypass
In a study by the German motoring organization ADAC, bleaching all investigated keyless cars accessed via a detour and can be started. The union could bypass security with cheap technology, a signal amplifier.
For this, the thief must be in the vicinity of the owner of the “key”. Then, the distance signal of the key with a special amplifier can be increased. This way to steal a car is according to the ADAC been known for years, but seemed still the domain of researchers. Hardware to open the cars, the German motoring organization has built itself a few hundred euros.
Opening a car keyless “and start being more popular. Nearly all car manufacturers offer the option at an additional cost on. If the owner of the key in the vicinity of the car is automatically the car opens and start the engine having to catch up with a simple start key without the key in a pocket or purse. In Europe, usually system operates at 125kHz and 433MHz.
The test performed is not new, but the hardware was still pricey. Researchers from the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, presented the technology as early as 2011. They tested their technique on ten different models from eight manufacturers. It’s ADAC managed to improve the radio link between the car and the key to consumer hardware using the 2.4 GHz frequency. Then the attacker with the receiving device must be within two meters of the key to send the signal to an accomplice in the vicinity of the car. With more expensive, special equipment, it is also possible to capture the signal to eight meters away, or by walls.
The relay attack, according to ADAC already performed to steal cars. ADAC tested models of Audi, BMW, Citroen, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Range Rover, Renault, Mazda, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Ssangyong, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen. All cars were prone to attack.
ADAC hopes that carmakers will jointly improve the security of the electronics, as has long been standard in other IT sectors.Viewing:-156
