‘GitHub also spoke with Google about a possible takeover’

According to CNBC sources, Microsoft was not the only party in discussion with GitHub about a possible takeover. Google also spoke with the company, even though Microsoft’s offer could have kept the search giant at a distance.

The talks with Google lasted for a period of several weeks, as various sources with knowledge of the course of events report to CNBC . Ultimately, however, Microsoft would have offered a higher amount, which according to one of the sources amounted to 25 times the turnover of GitHub. On Monday, it was announced that Microsoft would deposit $ 7.5 billion in shares for GitHub, which would mean GitHub’s revenue would be $ 300 million.

Over the years, GitHub has received several takeover requests, including from Amazon, Atlassian and the Chinese Tencent. One of the sources says that GitHub founder Chris Wanstrath felt attracted to Microsoft by CEO Satya Nadella, because of his focus on open source software. Nadella succeeded in convincing Wanstrath over the past two years that GitHub would fit well within Microsoft. Microsoft is keen to bind developers because it lacks a mobile platform like iOS or Android.

After the rumors about the acquisition by Microsoft, GitHub alternative GitLab already reported an inflow of imports of GitHub projects. According to information from the company, this trend is still continuing and almost 100,000 projects have been imported. The question remains whether these projects actually continue permanently.
