GlassUp: Google Glass competitor for $ 199

Google Glass is probably the most controversial tech gadget of the year. But other manufacturers dare a foray into the world of data glasses. The Italian startup GlassUp tried it with his own version. To be financed the whole thing about crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo.

The admittedly somewhat clunky-looking glasses comes at a very attractive price (it is in any case, even if the funding on IndieGoGo fails). $ 199 will be due for a standard model. It is still cheaper to orders equal to 10 of the eyeglasses. The price per piece then falls to $ 150.

But what can the glasses? In the initial stage mainly show news. Emails, text messages and status updates should be possible by pairing the smartphone. Later, additional content planned, subtitles in movies, navigation or even reviews of restaurants. Very reminiscent of Google Glass. But there are also differences.

So one has to look his example, not specifically directed at the screen, the information is projected directly in front of the eye. This content comes from the smartphone and all are sent via Bluetooth to the glasses. This video shows the functioning quite well.

It is operated via a touch panel on the side (you guessed it). Tap, Double-Tap and swipe provide navigation through the various options. A camera is not available and it is a device that can only receive data. This might take a bit of privacy skeptics the wind out of the sails.

Nevertheless questionable whether the timing of the publication was not something bad choice. Deliveries are scheduled to start in early 2014, about the pivot is also speculated Google Glass for the mass market. I do not take pleasure GlassUp the glasses, but I am not completely convinced by Google Glass.

On the project page there are some pictures there you can watch also secure your own copy, should your interest in it. What do you think, can such a passive glasses alongside Google Glass exist?
