GlobalFoundries makes first AMD test chip on 14nm finfets

GlobalFoundries and AMD have the first sample of an AMD chip developed with finfets on a 14nm-process. The test chip is produced on the second generation 14nm process, but details are still missing.

GlobalFoundries and AMD talk about silicon success at a demonstration of an AMD 14nm FinFET-chip, which is likely to mean a working sample. The test chip is in GlobalFoundries Fab 8 rolled in New York band. It is about 14 lpp process’, the second generation of the technology. Currently, GlobalFoundries has been producing engine designs based on 14 lpe but would Ipp according to Anandtech for roughly 10 percent should provide better performance.

It is unclear whether this is a GPU, CPU or APU. In the fourth quarter, the 14lpp-production start, and large-scale production in 2016 should take place. Global Foundries cooperates with Samsung to the development of the 14nm process. Among other things, the next Zen-chips will be baked at 14nm. AMD has high expectations of these processor
