“Gold nanoclusters”: a revolution in the field of solar energy?




Scientists at the University Western’s discovered that a tiny molecule, created all of the 144 gold atoms can improve the performance of solar cells by more than 10 percent. The work, published in the journal Nanoscale, sheds light on this great innovation that can radically change the solar infrastructure and further reduce the world’s dependence on traditional energy sources, says Giovanni Fancini from the University of Western blots.

Fancini says that the new technology is easily verified and will be integrated into prototypes of solar panels in a year or two, and phone numbers on solar energy will have five.

“Every time you charge your cell phone, you need to connect it – says Fancini. – What if you could charge your mobile devices, phones, tablets and laptops on the move? This would be not only convenient, but also provided the potential energy savings. ”

Western’s scientists have already begun working with the manufacturers of solar cells to integrate their innovation in the existing network technologies of solar cells, and extremely pleased with the results.

“The Canadian industry has already acquired a significant know-how in solar infrastructure – says Fancini. – Our invention is a modular, lightweight add-on to an existing production process, so we expect that a working prototype will be very soon. ”

Using nanoplazmonicheskie improvements Fancini and his team took the “gold nanoclusters” as building blocks to create a flexible network antennas on traditional solar panels to increase the exposure to light. “Imagine a very delicate gold chain – explains Fancini, stressing that the antenna is so petite that they do not see in a conventional optical microscope. – Network catches the light emitted by the sun and converts it into the active region of the solar cell. ”

It is well known that the large gold nanoparticles enhance performance of batteries, but Western’s team was able to achieve results with a “ridiculously small amount” – 10 000 times smaller than in previous studies, and therefore, the cost is also reduced 10 000 times.
