Google closes doors of source code hosting site code




Google Code, where developers could host open source projects, is closing its doors. That Google has announced. There are now better alternatives like GitHub and BitBucket, and thus code no longer necessary, says Google.

Meanwhile, there are better alternatives, such as GitHub and BitBucket, and Google Code is no longer necessary, allows the search giant. The source code hosting site will therefore close its doors.

The closure of the site is gradual. It is now no longer possible to create new projects, but for existing projects, nothing changes in the coming months. From 24 August it is no longer possible to make changes; since then the site in read-only -available. From January next year the site is definitely closed, though there are still tarballs with the content of projects offered throughout 2016.

Google has a tool created that allows developers to export their code to GitHub. Projects on Google Code using Subversion or Mercurial version control, are then converted to Git projects. Google states that it itself has transferred nearly a thousand projects from Google Code to GitHub.
