Google expands team that works on its own chips

Google has expanded its team that works on its own chips in the past period, which is evident from, among other things, LinkedIn profiles and vacancies. The search giant has hired at least sixteen chip designers in India.

Press agency Reuters writes about the expansions in response to the vacancies and profiles, but the news agency also recruits an expert from a research agency that follows the chip industry. Google would have hired various chip designers in Bangalore. Traditional chip manufacturers have been active in that city in India for a long time.

Google has hired sixteen experienced designers who come from other companies such as Qualcomm, Broadcom and Nvidia. There are also still thirteen vacancies open. Google does not want to discuss the appointment of new people to Reuters. It is not clear what exactly the new employees are focusing on.

Google has been working on its own chips for some time, just like other big tech giants. Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook are working on their own hardware. For the time being, Googles own hardware is mainly used in servers and deep-learning, but in 2017 the company hired an Apple chip designer and Google has previously indicated that it wants to make socs for smartphones.
