TorrentFreak that the sudden increase remarked , notes that the increase following the implementation of a new search algorithm by Google. This algorithm has the effect that the sites for which a lot of removal requests come in, lower end up in the search results. This copyright holders now have an additional motivation to many removal requests.

The number of removal requests has grown dramatically in recent years. By mid-2011 this number was around 70,000 per week. A year later there were more than a half million per month; in 2013 around five million.
