Google introduces Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

Google has announced the third generation of its Pixel smartphones on Tuesday. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL must distinguish themselves with artificial intelligence that helps with multiple photo functions.

The Pixel 3 XL is a smartphone with a 6.3 “screen with a 19: 9 ratio and narrow notch. The device is 158mm long and 76.7mm wide The Pixel 3 has a 5.5” screen with 18: 9 ratio and has edges above and below, but no notch. This smartphone is 145.6mm long and 68.2mm wide. Both models are therefore larger than the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, which have a 5 “and 6” screen respectively.

Both devices have the Snapdragon 845 and 4GB ram on board. Both models come in variants with 64GB and 128GB storage memory, with no possibility to expand the storage capacity with microsd cards.

At the back of both the Pixel 3 and the 3 XL there is a single camera, with a resolution of 12.2 megapixels. The fingerprint scanner is also located at the back. At the front there are two cameras, one with a wide-angle lens to capture more of the background when making selfies.

Google again uses artificial intelligence for good quality of images. The camera is assisted by the Pixel Vision Core, a Google-designed chip for calculations on visual images such as hdr +. The camera supports Google Lens, for automatically recognizing images.

Part of the camera functionality are the Top Shot, Photobooth and Super Res Zoom modes. Top shot is burst mode where artificial intelligence chooses the best picture, such as the image where everyone looks into the camera. The Pixel 3 then displays “Smart capture available” with dots above the best picture.

Photobooth is a kind of self-timer in which artificial intelligence determines when the most suitable moment is and then takes the picture. Super Res Zoom improves the quality of images when zooming. In addition, there is Night Sight, which has to take good pictures in low light without the user having to flash.

The Pixel smartphones include the Google-designed Titan security chip, which provides, among other things, the storage of passwords and other hardware-based security options. This is very similar to the functionality of Apple’s Secure Enclave and rpm chips from business laptops.

Pixel Stand Together with the smartphones, Google announced the Pixel Stand. In this standard, the smartphone can be used stationary in combination with the Google Assistant and the accessory ensures wireless charging based on the Qi standard. Wireless charging is now possible because the back of the Pixel 3 models is made of glass. By default, Google provides an 18W charger for fast charging.

The 64GB version of the Google Pixel 3 gets a suggested retail price of 849 euros in Europe, for the 128GB version 949 euros is charged. For the Pixel 3 XL of 64 GB, 949 euro has to be added and the 128GB version will be able to transfer the thousand euro with a price of 1049 euro. The Pixel Stand costs 79 euros.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL will be available on 2 November in white, black and sand colors. The Netherlands and Belgium are not yet in line with countries where the smartphones are officially available.
