Google announced on Monday a new initiative called the People + AI Research Initiative or PAIR to help researchers study the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.

Through the new initiative, the US research giant hopes to make artificial intelligence more useful to humans, especially after the past few years have witnessed rapid progress in automated learning, with a significant improvement in technical performance.

Google noted in a blog post that rapid progress included providing more accurate speech recognition techniques, improved image search, and improved translations. However, the company believes that artificial intelligence “is able to develop much more, and be more useful to all of us, if we build systems that take people into account since the beginning of the process.”

The PAIR initiative, announced yesterday, aims to bring together researchers to study and redesign ways people interact with artificial intelligence systems. The initiative also aims to focus on the “human side” of artificial intelligence, including the relationship between users and technology, the new applications it offers, and how to make them widely available.

Google says it will rethink artificial intelligence at three levels, “how we can use it as a tool in everyday life, how professionals in all fields can use it to make their jobs easier, and how artificial intelligence can be developed for engineers.”

The company says that as part of the PAIR, new open source tools will be offered, as well as educational material, as well as research to help advance artificial intelligence.

Google is not alone in taking major steps to help develop the fledgling field. The Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Governance Fund, led by the Berkman Klein Internet and Society Center of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, has pledged $ 7.6 million to support the creation Artificial intelligence serves public interests.

In addition, the technology giant last year agreed with Amazon, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft to create a new non-profit partnership under the name “Partnership on Artificial Intelligence for People and Society.”
