The Google + leak published on Monday by Google is being investigated by US and EU supervisors. This includes the privacy regulators of Ireland and the German state of Hamburg.

Studies are not only running in Europe, but also in the US. Press agency Reuters quotes spokespersons of public prosecutors of the states of New York and Connecticut who state that the details of the incident are being investigated. A spokesman for the Irish privacy supervisor says: “The Data Protection Commission was not aware of this incident and we now need to understand the details of the leak, including the nature, impact and consequences for individuals, and we will request information about this. at Google. ”

The privacy regulator of the German state of Hamburg says he has sent questions to Google. With this, the organization wants to find out how many German users can be affected. Because the incident occurred before the entry into force of the general data protection regulation, or AVG, both the German and the Irish regulators are busy with the case, according to Reuters. The AVG introduced the concept that organizations have to deal with a single supervisor in the EU. In the case of Google, that would be Irish.

Google announced at the beginning of this week that it will stop with Google+ for consumers. At the same time, it became known that an internal investigation revealed that the People api of its social network provided access to profile data of users and public information of their friends. This included data such as name, e-mail address, work and gender, even if they were protected. Google stated that data from 500,000 accounts were potentially at risk in this way.

Because there was no evidence that access was misused, the company did not release the leak. According to The Wall Street Journal, it also happened that Google did not want to suffer any damage to reputation and wanted to stay out of supervisors’ view.
