Google makes recording phone calls impossible in Android 9

Google has reportedly made it impossible for apps in Android 9.0 Pie to record conversations. That’s what the developers of two such apps say. It is unknown why Google did that.

According to developer Boldbeast of Call Recorder for Android, users need root to make recording calls work, while the developer of ACR – Call Recorder says there will be no workaround to make the app work on Android 9.0 Pie.

Piunikaweb points out that there have been indications that Google wanted to make recording conversations a standard feature in Android 9.0, but that has not happened yet. Local legislation in some countries would also make it difficult. It is unknown how many users there are of apps that record conversations. The developer of ACR says there are 200 apps in the Play Store with a total of 200 million downloads.

Google released Android 9.0 a week and a half ago for its own Pixel phones. Although the Android version is out, there is a chance that the search giant will announce new features. That also happened last fall, when Google came with 8.1 shortly after Android 8.0.
