Google new smart lens can be implanted in the eye

Google claims to have found a way to replace the lens in the eye with an artificial version containing all sorts of clever features. A patent application shows that Google is such a lens is equipped with sensors, storage and wireless communications.

The patent application was filed in the US patents USPTO organization, as discovered Forbes. From the accompanying description show that Google intends to inject the smart lens as a kind of liquid, after which it is naturally hard, and can act as a kind of artificial lens. This is possible because we have chosen a flexible polymer as a building material. Of course, the natural lens must be removed first, before placing in the Google version. Replacing the lens is not a new procedure; inter alia, in cataract exists the treatment by the insertion of an artificial intraocular lens.

Via wireless communication with an external PC, the lens can be set, making it possible to restore a portion of the eyesight in eye disease, as is at least the thought. By built-in sensors can detect how much accommodation capacity is needed. For the power supply is a accu’tje site, which receives its energy via wireless signals. Or is there already been tested on patients is still unclear.

Previously demonstrated Google also a lens, but hereby it went to a variant which is applied to the eye. By analyzing tear the blood sugar level can be determined, and that is to offer a solution for diabetics. Furthermore, Google has at the edges a built-in camera. The fact that Google has now also devised an implantable lens that the plans for such products to be taken seriously. However, it will likely be years before smart lenses are actually available.
