For these external airbags Google has now awarded a patent that describes the operation of the airbags. Should be protected from all pedestrians. Such protection is also found in normal cars. THe hood must offer some protection in a collision, for example, with Audi there is, for example, so that the engine cover plate is raised in a crash by small explosions to get a larger crumple zone. Fascinating technology that significantly differs from Google’s approach.

Google wants not only that the pedestrian impact with the vehicle undamaged stands, but also not bounce and then hits the ground. This would be, for example, where in normal bumpers. Therefore, Google relies on a mixture of a viscoelastic material that leaves the pedestrians do not bounce, but receives a majority of the impacts.

These elements are to be mounted in the bumper, and at the sides of the vehicle. Whether Google will actually use this approach in his self-propelled vehicle, however, is not clear. There are always things patented, then not necessarily lead to a product.
