Google Pixel: Users are bothered by Lens Flare on images, Google promises Fix

Google App Article Logo The camera of the Google Pixel Phones is great, which shows not only the high score of DxOMark, but also recordings that come from anybody. Photos are taken toll, you can also in our review to see. But users caused frequently a lens flare effect when the light source from a certain angle strikes the lens of the camera. A user even reports that a Halo in use via HDR + even without sunlight appears. For images of other users of the effect, however, is clearly seen.

The problem is actually in my opinion, none was even in the pixel user community supported and Google has responded. IsaacOnCamera, the same type that already use stated by EIS instead OIS also clarifies this time again and promises a fix in the next few weeks. Lens flare would be with every camera under certain circumstances, these halo or Arc flare will be fixed however via software update.

The fix can be expected in the next weeks, but it will only be available in the HDR + mode. Also this is in my opinion no disadvantage, so you have at least in the normal mode still the possibility, the effect “artistic” to use. However, if you do not want to have it, you can remove it by using HDR +. Google will be able to count on it almost through software from the picture, the corresponding algorithms the company is working.

IsaacOnCamera also directly points out that it makes no sense to exchange his Pixel Phone because of this “lack”, since all pixels have the same camera and thus also the same Lens Flare effect, whether one would now or not.

Here is the complete statement from Isaac from the Pixel User Community:

Hi all

First, for some background – flare is a property of ALL camera lenses. It comes in a ton of different shapes and sizes and can even be used for creative effect – good and bad :-). The shape, color, amount, etc. of flare is related to dozens of different parameters of the lens structure and inclement light.

However, we have seen reports about this “halo / arc flare”. This is the specific kind of flare that is a bright / low contrast arc in the corners of the frame.

You can expect a software update in the next few weeks. We are working on some algorithms that recognize the halo / arc flare, characterize it mathematically, and then subtract it from the image. 🙂 You will need to use HDR +

So, there’s no point getting your device. The pixel camera’s lens structure is very highly controlled – this means that all pixels take high-quality images, but it also means all pixels have the same flare characteristics.

I wrote a post a while ago about about how things are done in software, we are able to make pixel’s camera even better over time. This is one of those ways.
