Google sister company Waymo starts offering self-driving taxis

Google sister company Waymo has started offering its taxi service with self-driving cars in the American city of Phoenix. The Waymo One service can still be used by a few hundred people.

Although the car is self-propelled, there is a driver behind the wheel to intervene when necessary, writes Waymo . The Waymo One service will be available to more and more people next year, once there are more cars on the road. Users can book a taxi through an app, with which they communicate with the service. This way, for example, they can also change the destination on the way.

Waymo has been doing a beta test with the self-driving cars in Phoenix for a year and a half. It is probably Chrysler Pacifica minivans, which Waymo has equipped with all kinds of sensors and cameras to observe the environment.

It is unknown when Waymo will expand exactly to other regions. It seems that the company first focuses on the United States. When and if the service will come to Europe is as yet unclear. Waymo stems from Google’s experimental project to build a self-driving car.
