Google wants to force users to make a face in front of a smartphone

Passwords may soon go into the past. Technology companies are looking for new ways to provide users with access to consumer electronics and bank accounts without the need to remember complex code phrases and combinations of numbers. For example, Motorola offered to store the passwords in the form of electronic tattoos and pills. Apple is set up not so radical. The company is rumored to be planning to equip your iPhone fingerprint scanner. A more practical alternative to passwords came up with Google . The other day on the web has been published patent, which says about the technology of facial recognition as one of the options for user authentication.

According to the patent, filed in the U.S. Patent Office in June 2012, developed by Google face recognition technology involves the use of facial images with emotional expression as a password. The resulting image is compared with the original photo of the user. Each time the device will prompt identification, the user will have to make different facial expressions – smiling, winking or, for example, to move the eyebrows. You can engage all the muscles of the face, according to the patent.

Although on the face authentication is not new, the use of facial expressions may provide additional protection against unauthorized access devices and personal user data by persons not qualified to do so permit. The patent also describes how some methods can help reduce the likelihood of incorrect authentication by spoofing (getting spoofing).

“The idea is that an attacker can cope with a static image on the computer. But forge a unique facial expression will not be able impostor. Anyway, in theory, “- writes Rebecca Greenfield, a journalist of the American magazine The Atlantic.

In 2011, it became known that the Android-app Face Unlock, which uses facial biometrics instead of passwords, is also working with printed photographs, which facilitates unauthorized access to devices and personal information of users. Google has corrected this oversight in June 2012, releasing a software update that before unlocking mobile device prompts the user to blink at the camera. However, the photo editing skills and allows you to bypass this, if I may say so, the decision.

Google patent is still waiting for its approval. When a company is able to implement a new authentication method is not yet clear. Google makes no comments on this topic.
