For the purposes of reducing CO 2 emissions, the Dutch government also wants to focus on promoting electric driving on hydrogen in addition to promoting electric driving with a battery. That is what the State Secretary for Infrastructure and Public Works says in a Letter to Parliament.

State secretary Stientje van Veldhoven says in the Letter to Parliament that hydrogen can become an important fuel, particularly for transport at longer distances and with heavier vehicles. Van Veldhoven sees driving in hydrogen as a way for the Netherlands to comply with the agreed reduction of CO 2 emissions in the Paris climate agreement. According to the Secretary of State, driving on hydrogen and electric driving on batteries are both sustainable because both are ‘Tankto-Wheel zero emission technologies’.

“The Well-to-Wheel CO 2 emissions from both technologies are determined by the extent to which the electricity or hydrogen has been sustainably produced, and the end is that both battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles will run on sustainably produced energy.” She does not go into the fact that hydrogen-electric driving still has a significantly lower energy efficiency at the moment.

Two GroenLinks MPs asked the State Secretary about the subsidy that Shell receives for the installation of four hydrogen stations in the Netherlands. For these stations, Shell receives a total of slightly less than 3.3 million euros in subsidies from a subsidy scheme for the transport sector. According to the state secretary, the subsidy scheme that was used is a ‘technology-neutral scheme’ and so the government can also use the subsidy for electric driving on hydrogen.
