Find a Question:
GRAPHENE PAINT IN THE FUTURE WILL SAVE US FROM CORROSION
Surface of graphene , a single atomic layer of carbon, can be covered with oxygen to create graphene oxide; this form of graphene could have a significant influence on the chemical, pharmaceutical and electronics industry, reported Phys.org. If you spray a “paint”, it can provide a heavy-duty stainless coating for a wide range of industrial applications.
Graphene oxide may be used for coloring a variety of surfaces from glass and metal to conventional bricks. After a simple chemical treatment coating will behave as graphite in terms of thermal and chemical stability, but the mechanical properties will be close to the graphene, the most durable materials known today.
The team led by Dr Nair Raguli and Nobel laureate Andrei Geim previously showed that multilayer films of graphene oxide are vacuum-dry conditions, but if you expose them to water or its vapor, they will act as a molecular sieve, letting small molecules below certain size. These findings could have huge implications for water purification.
These contrasting properties are due to the structure of graphene oxide films, which are composed of millions of small flakes imposed in random order at each other, but having nanoscale capillaries between them. Water molecules can be placed in these skip and small nanocapillaries atoms and molecules.
In a paper published in Nature Communications this week, a team from the University of Manchester has shown that these can be tightly nanocapillaries using a simple chemical treatment that will make graphene films even more mechanically and completely impervious to all: gases, liquids, or strong chemicals . For example, researchers have shown that the copper containers or utensils, the graphene-coated with paint, can be used as containers for highly corrosive acids.
Exceptional barrier properties of graphene inks have already attracted interest from many companies that are currently collaborating with the University of Manchester, developing new protective and anti-corrosion coatings.
“Graphene paint has all chances to become a truly revolutionary product for the industry, which has to do with any kind of protection from the air, weather conditions, or corrosive chemicals. These include, for example, medical electronics and nuclear industry or even shipbuilding, “- said Nair.
Dr. Yang Su, the first author of the paper, adds: “Graphene paint can be applied to virtually any material, whether it be plastic, metal or even sand. For example, a plastic film coated with graphene may be useful as a medical packaging, they improve the shelf life, as will be less permeable to air and water vapor. In addition, the graphene layers of paint optically opaque. ”Viewing:-168
