GTA V developer Tom Shepard joins new game studio Microsoft

Tom Shepard, the technical director of Grand Theft Auto 5, has joined The Initiative. The studio was founded by Microsoft and includes other big names from the gaming industry, including Brian Westengaard, the lead producer of God of War.

According to Tom Shepard’s LinkdIn account , he has been working at The Initiative since September. Windows Central noticed the switch. Shepard was technical director at Rockstar Games and has not only worked on GTA V but also on Red Dead Redemption. The vacancy for technical director is still open on the website of The Initiative and his LinkdIn profile does not yet state which position Shepard holds. His role within the new studio is therefore not yet known.

In August, studio head David Gallagher announced that Shepard’s former colleague, Christian Cantamessa, was also working for the studio. Cantamessa has been the lead designer and writer for Red Dead Redemption.

On 10 June the founding of The Initiative was announced by Microsoft . The studio consists of developers from smaller studios bought by Microsoft, such as Ninja Theory and Undead Labs. These are respectively known from Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and State of Decay. The Initiative will mainly focus on developing Xbox One games.
