GTX 760: Choosing between two and four gigabytes

Test system

The test system includes Intel’s Sandy Bridge-E CPU, combined with the X79 chipset. Intel got a Core i7-3960X CPU, in an Asus Rampage IV Extreme motherboard is inserted. As benchmarks we have chosen the games Battlefield 3 vs. Aliens. Predator, DiRT: Showdown, Sleeping Dogs, The Witcher 2, Shogun 2: Total War, Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3. Of these games are, where available, all patches installed. Where possible, the internal benchmarks of the games used. For the benchmarks we use Nvidia’s 320.39 driver.

In 3DMark Fire Strike the Gigabyte card has scored a lot higher than the rest. Both the larger amount of memory as the higher clock frequency contributes to this. We reduce the clock frequency to the level of MSI, then the score is still more than a hundred points higher. Despite the lower clock frequency the Asus scored nine points higher than the MSI. In AvP performance of the three video cards barely differ. The GTX 760 from Gigabyte is the fastest, thanks to the high clock speed. If we adjust the GPU speed down to 1020MHz to match the speeds of MSI’s GTX 760 shows the difference nil. In AvP, the doubling of the memory clearly no sense.

With Crysis 3, the three video cards are quite work up a sweat. Playable minimum frame rates are achieved, but it does not. The video card from Asus is doing remarkably well, as we had expected something more. The MSI All overclocked ones do at least a lot better than the reference design.

DiRT: Showdown is a different story than Crysis 3, the game is on the highest settings, easy to play and it will average around 100fps out. With testing MSI’s GTX 760 is clearly gone wrong. Unfortunately we got there too late and could not run the benchmark again. Far Cry 3 and Shogun 2

The frame rates in Far Cry 3 are acceptable to 1920×1080 pixels on ultra settings. With the same clock speeds as the MSI card Gigabyte with 4GB memory performs significantly worse than the rest.

In Sleeping Dogs MSI GTX 760 is faster than the equally clocked GTX 760 with 4GB. Asus is the slowest of the overclocked cards, but the difference in frame rates with the reference design is clearly visible.

We have the benchmark for in-game use of the video card slightly modified. Previously, we turned our usual benchmarks in Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3, and we looked at the maximum consumption in those games. We have three different video cards with the same three GPUs placed side by side and looked at which of the trio is the fastest. That turned out to Gigabyte to come from. That conclusion was not exactly out of the blue, because the Gigabyte card has the highest clock frequencies and the most memory.

A note to the good scores of the Gigabyte card is that the lead is not huge. The difference compared to a standard GTX 760 is, depending on the benchmark, two to seven percent.
