Hacked TV5MONDE turns sloppy with passwords

TV5MONDE that Wednesday was hacked, appears not too careful with passwords. In a TV interview was about the hack anyway to read the password of the YouTube channel TV5MONDE for everyone.

The password of the YouTube channel was on a post-it that was read during an interview with TV5MONDE reporter David Delos. The interview with the French television program 13 Heures took place following the hack on TV5MONDE by jihadist attackers, who filled the social media accounts with extremist messages and retrieve the sender knew offline.

On the post-it stood in the background ‘lemotdepassedeyoutube’, which turned out to be the password of the YouTube channel, outdated Twitter user pent0thal. In Dutch is that “the password of YouTube. There were post-its with passwords of Twitter and Instagram accounts, but that could not be read properly.

Although the interview with 13 Heures can not have been the result of the hack – after all, took place after the hack – this shows how sloppy TV5MONDE mishandled passwords. Security researchers strongly advise against storing unencrypted passwords, let alone on post-its. TV5MONDE called but the hack until now “very advanced.”
