Hacker steals data from more than 5 million customers VTech – update




A hacker on Saturday, November 14th managed to get access to the customer base of the VTech Learning Lodge. The company says that the database names, includes email addresses, encrypted passwords, secret questions and answers, IP addresses and postal addresses.

In a statement stressed VTech that the database does not contain credit card information and personal data such as the BSN or the National Registry number. Matters such as payments to the company are namely handled through the website of a third party. The company has discovered digital burglary on November 24 and say they now have an extensive investigation and have taken the necessary measures for the security holes that used to fill the attacker. The database includes the data of US, Dutch and Belgian customers.

The VTech Learning Lodge is an online portal where users things like apps, ebooks, educational games and other learning materials can download. These are specially designed for cameras, smart watches, tablets, smartphones and other smart devices which the company specifically for children make. It is not clear how many customers are exactly the data in the database of the Learning Lodge. The Chinese now speak only of an outsider access has managed to get to the Learning Lodge database. The company does not comment on any actual theft of data. It is not known how strong the encryption on the passwords.
Update, 21:48: Motherboard said contact had with the hacker responsible for the data theft. The data 4833678 parents and more than 200,000 children were in the hands of the hacker.
