Hobbyists print keys to open luggage




With 3D printers fantastic things can be created. As scientists recently made a precise print of the heart. But there are also drawbacks to the technology, discovered the American customs.

The Washington Post recently published accidentally raw images of the so-called master keys, used by the US Transportation Security Administration for checking luggage. As the name suggests, with this government approved keys is estimated that millions of locks for control purposes be opened.

The Washington Post put the photos in an article about the “secret life” of American customs. Although the newspaper brought out the raw images quickly offline, the damage had been done. A group of hobbyists and security experts used the footage to create CAD files, which can be copied keys with a 3D printer.

The French promoter said to Wired that he did not expect it would work to recreate the keys. “But if somebody says that my 3d modeling work, then that’s cool and let that show an example picture of a set of keys may compromise the entire system.” Moments later reported a Canadian administrator that the keys actually work right away.
