Hospitals have until the spring of 2015 to replace computers that run on the end of life-Windows XP operating system or isolate. This enables the Dutch Association of Hospitals following a report of CBP.

Windows XP systems are under the NVZ supported by a contract extension until the spring of 2015. Hospitals within this period of time to switch to a more modern operating system or to isolate the equipment within a secure network. However, a spokesman for the NVZ indicates that the association is not able to control that. CBP would be responsible. The Dutch government, for example, a contract with Microsoft for XP extended support until April 8, 2015.

CBP has research done following a major vulnerability , with dozens of medical records and data from hundreds of thousands of patients of the Groene Hart Hospital would be leaked. Medical systems of the hospital turned according to the report on end of life operating systems. It then goes on OSes such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP, for which no security updates are released.

The network of the Groene Hart Hospital was the outdated operating system vulnerable to hackers, writes CBP. In addition, the majority of devices were connected to one network and that network also was connected to the internet. If a hacker had gained access to a system, then the entire network was vulnerable. Some systems could also reportedly be scanned for viruses because the risk that the system is failed.

The danger of the security problems became evident when according to the CBP hack that took place in October 2012. The Green Heart Hospital has taken in response to the study measures to better protect patient data. Vulnerable devices where possible phased out or placed in an extra secure network. There is however the caveat placed in that no measures have been taken for a number of devices.
