How good the keyboard of the new MacBook Pro is

protected from garbage
Silicone membrane under the keyboard of the new MacBook Pro was unable to provide full protection of the mechanism “butterfly” from getting fragments of debris and dust. This conclusion was reached by experts from the iFixit laboratory, having conducted a simple experiment with the sprinkling of keys with fine dust.

At the beginning of the experiment, when there was little dust, the membrane perfectly coped with its task, distributing the foreign material around the edges. However, as the load increased with the use of sand, the gasket ceased to protect the mechanism, which ultimately led to the disruption of its operation.

Cleaning the MacBook Keyboard

Cleaning the keyboard from extraneous materials was not a trivial task, according to iFixit engineers. As it turned out during the experiment, to remove the silicone membrane, which is a single sheet, you need to remove the entire top of the laptop.

Silicone gasket, which protects the mechanism of “butterfly” from getting dust, was not the only innovation of the keyboard of the new MacBook Pro. Engineers iFixit managed to find out that Apple has reduced the thickness of each key of a new generation laptop from 1.5 mm to 1.25 mm.
