HTC releases F1 McLaren edition of Vive Pro

HTC and sports car manufacturer McLaren have presented a limited edition of the Vive Pro on the eve of the Grand Prix Formula 1 of Abu Dhabi. With collaborations such as with McLaren, HTC is trying to tap new revenue sources.

The arrival of the Vive Pro McLaren Edition , performed in the team colors blue and orange, was already announced in May, when HTC and the car manufacturer signed a multi-year cooperation contract . HTC has since been the official VR partner in McLaren’s esports program , a virtual racing competition. There is not much difference with the regular Vive Pro. The buyer will receive two VR titles that are usually exclusively reserved for users with a paid Viveport subscription. It is the simracer rFactor 2 of Studio 397 and McLaren Garage VR Experience, in which you can virtually take a look at the pit lane.

The price of the Vive Pro McLaren Edition is 1550 euros a lot higher than the normal version of the VR kit, which costs 1399 euros. For HTC, collaboration with McLaren may also be a way to tap into other revenues. In the first half of the year the company experienced increasing competition from the Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Media glasses, as was evident from the hardware and software survey that Valve holds monthly among Steam users. However, HTC’s market share appears to have stabilized again from the latest figures .

HTC already learned in July that companies, such as McLaren, are increasingly investing in virtual reality, in response to a message from Digital Trends that the sales of vr headsets would have dropped significantly , with the site relying on sales data from Amazon . “In the VR industry, it is important not only to deliver units, but to ensure that we provide growth for customers and companies over time,” the company said at the time, referring to IDC. figures that claim that the HTC Vive has the highest market share in sales, followed by Samsung and Sony. HTC and Oculus do not announce sales numbers.
